Book Publication
Professor Howard Odum has received support to edit a book on research into the roles of heavy metals in swamps in Poland and the United States, with particular emphasis on ecological engineering practices to ameliorate harmful effects.
Short Course on Sustainable Development
In two successive years, June/July of 1998 and 1999, a three week course on Sustainable Development was run for 25 Polish students by the Center for Construction and the Environment, University of Florida and our Chief of Staff, Gisela Bosch.
Educational Travel
- In August 1998 a forest ecologist from Bialowieæa National Forest traveled to several national parks and universities in the United States to discuss methods to determine the minimum area necessary in a park to insure that biodiversity can be sustained.
- In March 1999 seven Polish students, scientists and environmental professionals visited Minnesota for one week to see and discuss actual projects in environmental research, education and restoration that are run by partnerships between government, scientists and citizens.
Fellowships
Since 1998 the foundation has supported a fellowship for a student at the Center for Applied Ecology, University of £ód¼, doing doctoral research in eco-hydrology of rivers and reservoirs in the £ód¼ region.
Technology
Computers, printers and software have been purchased for students studying ecology in £ód¼ and Kraków, for a hydrologists working in Warsaw and for an NGO working in the Carpathian Mountains.
Grants in Partnership with other Foundations
Since 1997 the Foundation has joined in forces with the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The C.S. Mott Foundation, the German Marshal Fund and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung für Umwelt within the Polish Environmental Partnership Fund (PEPF). The Foundation continues to give annual grants through the PEPF for projects that promote civic society by supporting communities in their efforts to define and solve environmental problems.
Meetings - Conferences and Workshops
- In June 1997 the Foundation collaborated with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria to present a workshop on Adaptive Management to 20 scientists and environmental professionals from Poland
- In October 1998 the Foundation joined with the Heritage Resources Center of the University of Waterloo and the Polish Environmental Partnership Fund (PEPF) in sponsoring a conference on the environmental and social aspects of flooding in Poland.
- In May 1999 the Foundation collaborated with the Center for Applied Ecology, University of £ód¼ in a workshop on the restoration of the Soko³ówka river valley in the City of £ód¼.
- In the autumn of 1999 the Foundation collaborated with the PEPF, the PTOP (Society for Bird Protection in the Polesie), the Polish Ministry of Environment and Narew National Park in presenting a series of four workshops on sustainable development for local government officials, park scientists and for educators.
